clay and plaster

This was the first piece for my second sculpture class. The only instructions for this one were that we had to use clay and plaster to make something. I got stuck and spent far too long working on an object that ended up looking like a coral reef paper weight or a piece of popcorn.

I was thinking about skipping this one all together but I think there are some redeeming things about it so I decided to throw it in here despite some reservations.

I like the complexity of shape as well as the range of light and shadow that I got from simply poking a ball of clay. There was also something about the repetition of the act itself that I liked. This idea of repetition is something that shows up in quite a few of my other pieces as well.
